POWERING VALUE IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRIES

POWERING VALUE IN THE CONSTRUCTION AND AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRIES
Lime Sales

The mainstay of any country’s economy is a network of accessible, well-constructed roads that connect communities, industry and business. Likewise, the importance of food grown in pace and tandem with an expanding population means agriculture must perform at tiptop condition.

Our purpose at Lime Sales is to ensure that the components required to build efficiently and farm efficiently are sourced and supplied with competency and trust in delivery. Our mining operations are keyed to do just this, securing high-quality dolomitic lime for agriculture and dolomitic aggregates that create strength and endurance for construction.

What is dolomitic lime?

Dolomite is an organic agricultural soil fertiliser. The difference between calcitic and dolomitic lime is that dolomitic lime is a source of magnesium and therefore can be used for soil that needs magnesium, and it neutralises acidic soil.

How does it benefit agriculture?

Dolomite is an excellent soil improver, especially where there is a shortage of magnesium. Magnesium is the central element in the chlorophyll of the leaves of crops, and it improves the energy status of the whole plant. Therefore, magnesium is vital for overall plant health, as well as improving soil conditions for increased crop production.

What are dolomitic aggregates?

Dolomitic aggregates are crushed rock composed primarily of the mineral dolomite, which is a calcium-magnesium carbonate. They are widely used in the construction industry as a substitute for, or in addition to, traditional aggregates like gravel and sand in concrete and asphalt mixes. Dolomitic aggregates offer benefits such as improved durability, enhanced wear resistance, and the potential to reduce cement usage in concrete.

How do our dolomitic aggregates benefit the civils and construction industries?

  • Dolomitic aggregates have high compressive strength and exceptional weathering resistance, making them ideal for demanding applications like road bases, concrete mixes, and drainage systems. Its durability helps extend the life of your infrastructure.
  • Aggregates are useful for derivatives such as: G5 sub-base, G7 filling, and Gravel Wearing Course. Each product consists of a ratio of sand, clay and stones to correctly form the product per accepted South African standards.
  • G-Products are used in the construction of safe roads in the Western Cape, and as filling under floors, paving and sidewalks. Aggregate stones in sizes of 10mm mix, 10mm, 14mm and 20mm are used in the civil and construction industries to produce bricks and blocks, or used in mortar mixes for foundations or in ready mix products.

How do we find these essential raw materials?

Dolomitic limestone can be found by identifying its characteristic properties and geological formations. It's a sedimentary rock composed of calcium and magnesium carbonate, often appearing dull yellow-brown, granular, and softer than many other rocks. It is extracted primarily through open-pit mining, often involving blasting to break up the rock. The extracted rock is then crushed and can be further processed into various sizes, including a fine powder, or used in its bulk form.
